In Sweden, parents of small children have the right to cut their time to 75 percent. No questions asked.
I just returned to work after six months of parental leave. With Norah newly in preschool, I tried 100 percent. But it wasn’t working. Not with my wife very pregnant and in much pain. Not with a toddler in the biggest transition of her life.
This is exactly why we moved to Sweden. In America, with no local network of family and friends, our lives would suck. I could not cut time like this. I would have to find a new job, maybe. Or the family would simply suffer.
Here we have options (and I did take a 25% cut in pay).
And this is why I love paying the taxes. Options.
